Last year, 218 events that previously used animals made the compassionate choice to hold family-friendly, reindeer-free events instead. 

The welfare concerns are well-documented. Reindeer endure unnatural environments, limited space, constant handling, long-distance travel, and the stress of pulling sleighs. These conditions cause distress, fear, and exhaustion. Transportation and the events themselves can also compromise their immune systems, making them more susceptible to disease and infection. 

A recent report, “The Welfare Needs of Captive Reindeer Used for Entertainment Events in the UK: a review, by animal welfare researcher Dr. Tayla Hammond, concludes that such events should be discontinued due to the significant harm they cause. Dr. Tayla Hammond also reviewed video evidence collected by animal protection groups at last year’s events, revealing that 75% of the reindeer exhibited clear signs of stress. 

UK veterinarians have long raised concerns about keeping reindeer in captivity, citing issues like poor body condition, weight loss, and muscle deterioration. 

With growing awareness and many events choosing kinder alternatives, I urge you to follow suit. No reindeer should suffer for seasonal entertainment.
