Being vegan

Vegans avoid eating animal flesh, milk, eggs, and by-products. We also wear clothing and shoes made from alternatives to leather, wool, and suede.

But there are many other ingredients and materials we can come across in our daily lives, that we may not realise have come from animals and have caused them suffering. Household cleaning products, cosmetics and toiletries can contain animal ingredients and may have been tested on animals too. We have compiled handy lists of products, and ingredients, that should, when possible, be avoided, and included any alternatives to them.

There is a lot of ‘accidentally vegan’ food available, on which the label doesn’t indicate that it’s free from animal ingredients, so sometimes we need to check what those products contain. Read more

Millions of animals continue to be used in cruel chemical testing around the world. These include large numbers of mice, rats, and fish, with smaller numbers of rabbits, guinea pigs, birds and dogs being used as well. We believe this is totally unacceptable, especially when there are scientifically valid, humane alternatives available. Read more
