In July 2021 mandatory CCTV came into force for all Scottish slaughterhouses.

While slaughter could never be cruelty-free, it was believed the plans could make a huge difference in protecting animals from illegal violence which animal activists investigations had revealed. It was also believed the presence of CCTV cameras could have a deterrent effect and the footage could be used as evidence in prosecutions.

OneKind campaigned for animals in slaughterhouses for many years. SSPV second president (1918 to 1951), Nina Douglas-Hamilton, visited slaughterhouses to see the methods used. She protested at cattle markets and also held long talks and conference with those in the meat trade.
